A Little Ocean Meditation

Ryan here, just passing on a little note from Olivia Fisher, the artist behind The Shore Remembers at Abbotsford Convent which we’ve produced over the past couple months.

The Shore Remembers opens today.

We’re set up outside the Oratory at Abbotsford Convent, with our first three audience members already inside the exhibition listening. I’m definitely feeling those waves of nerves as I hand the work over to an audience, but mostly, I’m so excited to see how it’s received and how it makes people feel.

The Shore Remembers is a 30-minute solo headphone listening experience that takes listeners through a year of seasonal shifts along the shoreline at Anthony’s Nose. The connection between sound and place invites audiences to engage deeply with their environment, to reflect on the pride and ownership we feel in familiar landscapes, and the moral and ethical responsibilities we hold toward the places we call home.

Bump-in was relatively smooth, though, as always, time slipped away quickly and we left the venue at 9pm last night. It’s been wonderful to see the space come to life, the soft, textured curtains now hang gently, and the sandstone rocks glow beautifully under the light, creating an atmosphere that feels warm and inviting.

The Shore Remembers is hidden right behind this curtain we’ve installed.

This work feels deeply personal to me. It’s helped me reconnect with my sense of home during a time when that idea has felt uncertain. I hope that, by listening, you too are able to reconnect with your own memories of place.

We close on Saturday, so if you find a spare half hour amid your busy Fringe schedules, I’d love for you to come and join me for a little ocean meditation.
